Additional Information on Services Provided by Consultancy

Diagnosis not requiring plating -

The plant material  submitted will be inspected under a stereo/dissecting microscope. Symptomatic  tissues may be incubated in a moist chamber to encourage fungal growth.

Tar Spot on Maple LeafTar spot on maples

Diagnosis requiring plating on selective media -

Symptomatic tissues are plated on  selective growth media; fungi can then be identified. Bacteria isolated may  be further processed for species identification using the Biolog microbial  identification system.

Fusarium solani isolated from wheat Fusarium sp. isolation

Bacterial  test  (general)

Symptomatic tissues are plated on  selective growth media, bacteria isolated, and may be further tested using  selective media.

Plant identification  -

A qualified Plant pathologist  staff at Brij BugTrap Consultantcy P/L will performed the plant  identifications.

Thrip  identification -

Insects are  inspected under a dissecting/stereo- microscopeand thrips  identified to species level (Western Flower Thrip, WFT).

Basic insect identification -

Insects are inspected under a  dissecting/stereo-microscope and compared with reference material.

Forest Tent Caterpillar    Stink Bug

Insect identification (dissection/key required) -

Carpenter ant (worker)The staff will follow a detailed taxonomic  key in order to identify the specimen. As well, it may include a partial  dissection of the specimen in order to obtain body parts that clearly  identify an insect (especially true for immature/larval insects).

Nematode extraction from soil -

The Baerman pan method is used. The soil remains suspended in water  for 7 days during which time the nematodes present diffuse into the water.  They are then identified and counted .

Female ring nematode

PCN cyst & egg count-

The cysts of the potato cyst  nematode and the live eggs contained in the cysts are counted. The turn  around time for this procedure is 4 - 5 working days.

Nematode extraction from roots/plant tissues-

A minimum of 10 grams of fresh roots  are required for this test. Ideally the youngest, growing roots are preferred.  Most often, root lesion and root knot  nematodes are extracted with this procedure. The turnaround time is  just over one week.

Pinewood nematode detection in wood -

The wood is cut into small pieces  and soaked in water for 24 hours. The water is then carefully filtered and  nematodes microscopically.
